Another of our on going investigations of the Confederate Army raids across the southern portion of Ohio by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his raiders in July of 1863. General Morgan had started out with some 4000 troops from his home state of Kentucky but lost half of those men while cross the Ohio River near Cincinnati as they were fired upon by the defending Union Army.By the time they reached Guernsey County Ohio they were down to about 600 men when they were confronted by three companies commanded by Brig. General James Shackleford at Old Washington, Ohio as Morgan’s men rested and gathered supplies in town.The Union forces fired upon the Confederates from nearby Cemetery Hill,killing 3 Confederates and capturing 8. The remaining Confederates then fled north toward what is now Salt Fork State Park and engaging in another brief exchange of fire at an old covered bridge before heading east toward Harrison County then north to Columbia County where they were all captured 2 days later,but the story does not end there….
The weather today had dropped to the lowest it had been since I was here. I was wearing dark black jeggings with a gray wool sweater that had a single black bat on it. I had thought about wearing a jacket but I forgot, so now I was spending the school day freezing. I was sitting in English, looking out at the sky from the windows. It was a deep, gray color because clouds had covered themselves all across the canvas, blocking any light from showing so it looked like it was eight at night.
